What is the entry requirement ?
You are required to have a minimum of 3 S passes (including Mathematics and Physics) from the Sri Lankan local A/L's and we do accept students from London A/L's.

Can I visit SAITM ? What are the working days and hours at SAITM for prospective students ?
Yes. Prospective students can come and visit us at any convenient time during Monday to Friday from 08.30- 16.30 Hrs. Please obtain a visitor's pass from the main security gate, producing your picture identification (eg: National Id, Passport, Driving License etc…)

The degree we are getting from AIT, will it be accepted here in Sri Lanka and elsewhere in the world ?
AIT, Thailand is a recognized degree awarding university by the University Grants Commission (UGC), of Sri Lanka. Therefore, the degree you will be getting after the successful completion of the entire 4 year academic program will be recognized by the Sri Lankan government.
What is the entire course duration ?
The course duration for all the B.Sc. Eng. (Hons) degree programs in SAITM is 4 years (including 6 months of industrial training).
How much does it cost for the entire program ?
The entire course fee will be US$ 14,500 (excluding taxes).
Do I have to pay the entire course fee to SAITM ? Or else, what is the yearly breakdown of course fees ?
Can I study the entire 4 year program at SAITM ?
No. At the moment the arrangement is, you will have to study the 1st and 2nd years in Sri Lanka at SAITM and the 3rd and 4th years will be at AIT, Thailand.
How many intakes per year and what are the typical dates ?
We have two intakes. 1st intake in October and 2nd intake in January, per batch. But per year we have one batch of students.
For an example, for the 2012 batch, we take the 1st intake of students until 1st week of October, 2011 and the second intake of students until 2nd week of January, 2012. However, the academic works will start on 1st week of January, 2012.
If I could not make a decision at first time and happened to come for the 2nd intake do I miss anything ?
Yes you do. For an example, in 2012 batch, for the 1st intake of students in October, prior to the academic work on January with the 2nd intake, there will be a Communication Development Program of 10 weeks. There, we will be doing some basic introductory courses on Computer Programming, Mathematics and English Communication Skills I (3 Credits) module. Out of these, only the English Communication Skills I (3 Credits) module will be repeated in the 1st semester.
What is an academic year ? Is it different from a calendar year ?
Yes. It is different from a calendar year. An academic year means two consecutive semesters.
When does an academic year starts ?
Generally, an academic year at SAITM starts from 1st week of January.
What is meant by a Semester then ? How many weeks per Semester ?
A typical semester means 17 weeks as follows. However, this will vary in between 17-18 weeks.
What is the assessment criterion ? Do we have exams ?
The assessment criterion is a Grade Point Average (GPA) system, based on Credits.
Yes. You do get exams for mid-semester evaluations and end-semester evaluations.
My native language is not English. Do I have to take an English proficiency exam to enter into AIT ?
No. You do not need to sit for any other exams. Since the medium of lectures at SAITM is English, you will not have to sit for any other exams to transfer to AIT from SAITM.
If admitted, may I defer my acceptance ?
Yes. You can postpone to the next academic year.
May I study part-time ?
You cannot study a B.Sc.Eng. (Hons.) degree on part-time basis in either SAITM or AIT.
What are Grades ?
Grades and numerical grade-point equivalents displayed in the table below have been established for varying levels of students' academic performance.
These numerical grade-point equivalents are used to assess the performance of each student in each course.

What is Semester Grade Point Average (GPA) ?
A student's Semester Grade-Point Average (GPA) is the weighted mean value of all grade points he/she earned by enrollment or through credit by examination, in a semester.
What is Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) ?
A student's Cumulative Grade-Point Average (CGPA) is the weighted mean value of all GPA's he/she has earned during the entire study period.
What do you mean by Credit ?
Upon the successful completion of course units, students can earn credits. Each and every course unit is assigned a credit value representing the student's workload. In AIT and SAITM , for a typical course extending over one semester,
1 Credit = 1 Hr. of lectures per week x 14 no. of weeks
1 Credit = 2 Hrs. of Tutorials/Practical/Field Work/Design work per week x 14 no. of weeks
Must I have a minimum GPA to transfer to AIT ? Will everyone get transferred ?
Well, not everyone. Those who could maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0 and above will only be transferred to AIT at the end of 2nd year. However, those who have obtained a CGPA of less than 2.5 will be placed under automatic academic probation and will remain on probation until such time that he/she achieves a CGPA of at least 2.50 to be transferred to the next semester.
How many students are there at the SAITM ?
There are more than 600 students at SAITM in all four faculties. In the Engineering Faculty alone there are about 250 undergraduate students.
What is the composition of staff members ?
All our staff members are with local and foreign post-graduate qualifications including the permanent staff members and the visiting staff members from the state-sector universities like Moratuwa, Peradeniya and Ruhuna.
Are there any other programs to be introduced in near future ?
Yes, there are two more program to be introduced in near future which on B.Sc. in Environmental Engineering and B.Sc. in Bio-systems Engineering.
How many batches you have successfully transferred to AIT ?
We have successfully transferred our first batch of students for the 3 rd year at AIT in September, 2011. These are the field vice student numbers:

Are there any transport services arranged by the SAITM ?
Yes, there is a routing bus service operated by the SAITM for the students from Malabe and Kaduwela. It is free of charge for the students and staff.
How are the food and beverage facilities available at SAITM ?
We have a modern cafeteria open on normal lecture days from 7.30 am – 5.00 pm. However, the students can bring food from outside as well.
Is In-house accommodation guaranteed at AIT ?
During your stay at AIT in your 3rd and 4th academic years, In-House accommodation is guaranteed by the AIT. However, if you choose to move off-campus at any time, at which point the housing guarantee is forfeited.
Are undergraduates required to take in-house accommodation at AIT ?
Undergraduate students are not required to live on campus. But our advice is to stay within the AIT.
Are there any scholarships available for the students at AIT for the 3rd and 4th years ?
Yes. If you could maintain a CGPA of 3.60 and above at the end of 2nd year, and if you are ranked among the top 20% of the entire batch (including the students at AIT) you are entitle for a 50% fee waiver for the 3rd year at AIT. Similarly at the end of 3rd year if you could perform in the same caliber, you are entitle for 50% fee waiver for the 4th year.
If I previously applied to SAITM, will my application roll over ?
If you have applied to SAITM previously, the documents you provided at that time will not roll over. So you must provide a fresh application and resubmit any information requested in the application.
Do you accept students for Engineering from other Institutes ?
Normally, students are expected to complete their first two years at SAITM. However, if you wish to transfer from any other institute, it is your responsibility to ensure that an official transcript of grades is forwarded directly to the SAITM Registry. Exemptions can be considered to accept only for the 3rd semester. However, the students are required to sit for the semester evaluations.
Can I transfer my credits to SAITM from another Institute ? (I've already done one year of my diploma course, and I want to enroll into an Engineering Degree Program).
You cannot transfer credits from other institutes but the acceptance will be considered case by case basis. However, you must fulfill the A/L entry qualifications.
How is the food in AIT ?
At AIT, you get variety of delicious food available in the main cafeteria and other shops within the University. Further, there are shops open for 24 hours within the university itself.
What are the types of Dormitories available in AIT and how much is the cost ?
AIT student housing office provides a variety of dormitories (both A/C and non A/C) for all types of students (single, married, etc.). Dormitories are equipped with furniture, telephones, and hook-up to the Internet via the wireless network. For a shared room of 2 students, the cost will be Rs. 7,700/= (Bhatt 2150) for an A/C room and it will be Rs. 6,300 (Bhatt 1750) for a non A/C room.
Apart from the course fee, how much will be the average living cost in AIT per month ?
This will be in the range of Rs. 20,000-25,000/= (with accommodation) per month
Can we do laboratory practical at SAITM ? Do you have labs with necessary equipment ?
Yes. All relevant equipment which are necessary for the 1st and 2nd years of the Civil Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering Degree Programs are available in the laboratories.
Do we need to buy recommended text books for the studies ? Are they available in the Library ?
For all subjects, the recommended text books are available in the library. However, we strongly recommend you to keep a text book for your own references, as the number of copies available in the library is limited.
What are the extracurricular activities we can engage during our stay at SAITM and in AIT ?
Sports at SAITM include Rugby, Badminton, Table-Tennis, Carom, and Martial Arts

However, at AIT, you can play Golf, Swimming, Badminton, Tennis, Table-tennis, Basket-ball, Foot-ball, Cricket, Hockey, Squash, etc.
Can we change our stream after the first year ?
You cannot change your stream from Civil & Infrastructure Engineering to Mechatronics Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering to Civil & Infrastructure Engineering. However, within the Mechatronics Engineering Department you can change your field of study and you have that flexibility until you finished the second year. Because for third year onwards only you will be specializing in Mechatronics Engineering.
